An analysis by Statistics Korea found that the average number of rice meals consumed per day varies depending on age. People in their late teens to 30s, which comprised a high proportion of students and office workers, had the lowest frequency of rice consumption.

On the 25th, the National Statistical Office’s Statistics Development Institute published an article titled ‘Three Meals a Day, How Do We Consume Rice?’ published in the spring 2024 issue of KOSTAT Statistics Plus. This was analyzed through the report.

Jeong Mi-ok, an official at the National Statistical Development Institute who wrote the report, said, “Our country has maintained a rice-centered diet for a long time, but the consumption of rice is also changing along with various environmental changes.”

In fact, annual rice consumption per person has decreased by more than half in about 50 years, from 136.4 kg in 1970 to 56.7 kg in 2022.

By age, the average number of rice meals consumed per day was lowest among those aged 18 to 39 at 1.43, while those aged under 5 (2.26) and over 60 (2.27) showed a relatively high level. Those aged 6 to 17 were 1.96 times, and those aged 40 to 59 were 1.91 times.

The overall average was 1.86, which was slightly higher for men (1.92 times) than for women (1.80 times).

Daily rice consumption per person decreased every year from 172.9g in 2013 to 165.2g in 2015, 154.3g in 2018, and 127.6g in 2021. If a bowl of rice contains 100g of rice, it means that one person eats less than half a bowl a day on average.

By meal, lunch consumed the most rice at 59.4 g, followed by dinner (52.7 g) and breakfast (45.3 g).

Secretary Jeong said, “There is not a lot of eating out in the morning, so there is not much difference between the overall average intake and eating out.” He added, “At lunch, the average rice intake per meal when eating out was higher than when eating out, but for dinner, the rice intake when eating out was higher than when eating out.” ” he analyzed.

He added, “We confirmed that these lunch and dinner meal patterns, especially the proportion of meals eaten out, did not change significantly every year except for 2020-2021, which was the COVID-19 period.”

In addition, this spring issue of KOSTAT Statistics Plus included reports on △ factors influencing the introduction of new technologies related to the 4th Industrial Revolution by domestic companies △ status of small business export companies by company characteristics △ social safety and environmental awareness by generation.
