AIDS deaths fell 8.9% in the last decade in Mato Grosso do Sul – Cities

Mortality caused by AIDS fell 8.9% in the last decade in Mato Grosso do Sul. The number refers to the coefficient of deaths registered per 100 thousand inhabitants between 2012 and 2022 and was released yesterday (11) by the Ministry of Health.

Last year alone, 713 cases of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, were recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Still in 2022, 179 deaths were reported with AIDS or HIV as the underlying cause in the State. This number is 12.2% lower than the 157 deaths recorded in 2012.

Across the country, the drop in mortality was greater: 25.5% per 100,000 inhabitants. Despite the reduction, around 30 people died from AIDS per day last year, warns the Ministry of Health.

Capital – 7.9 deaths were recorded per 100,000 inhabitants last year in Campo Grande. The number is higher than the national average, of 4.1 deaths.

The Capital also had a high AIDS detection rate compared to Mato Grosso do Sul. The State reported 21.5 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, while Campo Grande reported 28.5.

The federal ministry also highlighted that the rate of pregnant women infected with HIV in the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul is 4.5 (cases per thousand live births). This transmission can be avoided when the mother is diagnosed with the disease and seeks medical assistance to take the necessary measures.

Clippings – Still according to data from the Ministry of Health, throughout Brazil there was an increase in reported cases among black and brown people, representing more than half of the occurrences in 2015. Until 2013, white skin color represented the majority of cases of infection by the HIV.

It is estimated that 1 million people currently live with HIV in Brazil. Of this total, 650,000 are male and 350,000 female. According to the HIV Clinical Monitoring Report, in the analysis considering the sex assigned at birth, women have worse outcomes at all stages of care, from diagnosis to treatment and control.
