After 109 days, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and after 105 days of imprisonment the party’s Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury have been released from prison.

They were released from Keraniganj Central Jail on Thursday (February 15) afternoon.

Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah, the lawyer of the two, confirmed the release.

Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah said that 11 cases were filed against Mirza Fakhrul in different police stations after the BNP general meeting on October 28 last year. He got bail from the court in all the cases. Apart from this, 10 cases were registered against Amir Khosroo in different police stations in the same incident. He got bail from the court in all the cases. The two were released from the Keraniganj Central Jail this afternoon after reaching the jail on bail.

It is to be noted that on October 28 last year, before the BNP’s general meeting started in Nayapaltan of the capital, police clashed with party leaders and activists from noon in Kakrail. The clash later spread to Vijayanagar water tank and Shantinagar area. At one stage, the BNP’s general meeting was closed at around 3 pm. A member of the police and a ward-level leader of Jubo Dal were killed in this clash. 41 police and 25 members of Ansar were injured. Besides, at least 20 journalists were injured.

After this incident on October 29, Mirza Fakhrul was arrested from his home in Gulshan by the Intelligence Department (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). After that, when he was produced in the court in the case of attack and vandalism at the residence of the Chief Justice, the court rejected his bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.

In addition, after the same incident, DB arrested Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury from a house in Gulshan at around 1 pm on November 1. The following day, on November 3, the arrest was shown in the case filed in connection with the death of a policeman in a clash during a rally. The court granted his 6-day remand in the case. After the remand, he was sent to prison on November 9.
