This match was marked by tension and controversy. The referee had granted seven minutes of injury time, during which Rizespor equalized, after Ankaragücü had been denied a goal moments before. Furious, Faruk Koca rushed at the referee as he returned to the locker room at the end of the match and punched him in the face.

The referee fell to the ground and two other people also attacked him. Following this incident, the Turkish Football Federation has decided to suspend all matches in the national championship until December 19.

Faruk Koca, who is also a member of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), was detained. He had been elected deputy twice and was considered one of his party’s favorites for the municipal elections scheduled for the end of March 2024. He was thus suspended for life by the Disciplinary Board of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) .
