The Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) has launched a campaign called “Don’t let them sell you smoke” to raise awareness among young people about the various dangers of tobacco and the new devices available.

The Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) has launched a campaign called #Quenotevendanhumo. The objective is to achieve the first smoke-free generation by 2030. The message of this project is focused both on the impact of tobacco on health, as well as on two other fundamental aspects.

In this way, the AECC explains to young people the marketing strategies used by the tobacco industry. and reminds them of the financial expense of tobacco consumption.

Under slogans such as ‘If you vape, your money goes waste’, the aim is to raise awareness among young people that, instead of spending on tobacco devices, they could save that money or invest it in other items or experiences such as a new mobile phone, technology, clothing or trips.

For the design of this campaign, the association has chosen to focus on language and adapt its message to the main information platforms consumed by young Spaniards.

Thus, through videos, songs and memes on social networks, we seek to have an impact on them with phrases such as “Stop smoking and vaping is also self-love”, “The piti off, the party on”… All of this with the objective to call on young people to be aware of the importance of their role in the fight against tobacco.

The impact of tobacco on young people

Traditional tobacco continues to occupy an important part of youth consumption. In fact, 50.6% of adolescents and young people smoke any type of product (traditional tobacco, hookah or vaping devices), according to the study “Influence of Video On Demand (VOD) and social media platforms on exposure to tobacco and new ways of smoking”made by Observatory of the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

Furthermore, 57.2% of young people believe that smoking is fashionable because actors do it, streamers o influencers. And the influence of social networks among adolescents and young people has made them discover new forms of consumption, managing to associate them with positive values and attitudes.

For this reason, the anti-tobacco campaign is very focused on digital content and profiles, since, according to a survey carried out in May 2023, nine out of ten young people have had at least one exposure to smoke through social media or platforms in the last 30 days. It is essential to raise awareness among the youngest about the consequences of smoking and its relationship with cancer.

Cancer and tobacco

Tobacco is responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths. It is estimated to cause 82% of lung cancers in Europe. What’s more, the risk of developing lung cancer is between 20 and 25 times higher among smokers than among non-smokers. Furthermore, the risk increases depending on the number of years you have been smoking, the number of cigarettes you smoke per day, and the age at which you start smoking.

The AECC, in addition to its commitment to achieving the first smoke-free generation by 2030, aims to achieve the same by 2040 throughout Europe. For this reason, it actively participates as a ‘Health Partner’ in the conferences organized by the What Really Matters Foundation. This involvement is significant since, thanks to these events, the prevention message can be involved and conveyed to a greater number of young people.
