Elon Musk criticizes Green Day for trashing Trump’s MAGA movement

Punk rock band Green Day recently caused a stir when it altered the lyrics of its hit song “American Idiot” to criticize the MAGA movement associated with former President Donald Trump. However, not everyone was impressed with the band’s statement, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to voice his displeasure.

During a performance at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.” This alteration drew criticism from Musk, who accused the band of “milquetoastedly raging for the machine.”

This jab at Green Day came amidst backlash from conservative pundits, who also blasted the band for the lyric swap and mocked the ages of its members, all of whom are 51. Green Day has a history of making overt political statements, such as coining the “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” slogan at the American Music Awards in 2016. The band has also sold merchandise celebrating Trump’s mugshot, while Musk himself has been critical of Trump’s policies in the past.

Despite not having a consistent history of supporting either the Republican or Democratic Party, Musk has aligned more with corners of conservative politics in recent years as he stepped up criticism of President Joe Biden’s administration. This incident further solidifies his stance as Musk continues to make his viewpoints on political issues known.
