EU asylum systems are on the verge of collapse

by time news

Almost a million people applied for asylum in the EU plus countries last year. The acceptance rate has increased to 40 percent.

By the end of last year, 636,000 asylum applications were pending across the EU: This is a new record since the great refugee crisis of 2015/16 – and an increase of 44 percent compared to 2021. The figures published by the EU Asylum Agency yesterday, Wednesday (EUAA) clearly show how the hopeless overloading of the asylum systems is progressing incessantly.

The goal of the heads of state and government to process applications more quickly in order to efficiently return people without a right to stay to their countries of origin is thus becoming a distant prospect. This circumstance is also due to the fact that last year almost a million (exactly: 964,966) applications were made in the EU-plus countries (EU-27 as well as Norway and Switzerland). That was at least half more than in the previous year – but only 632,000 decisions in the first instance were actually made.
