A study showed that exercising at least twice a week for at least an hour a week can reduce sleep disorders.

On the 27th, Dr. Erla Bjornsdotti’s team at the University of Reykjavik, Iceland, published data from over 4,400 survey participants in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS III), which was conducted over 10 years in 9 European countries, in the British Medical Association journal ‘BMJ Open’. It was revealed that these results were confirmed by analyzing .

The research team said that although there is research showing that regular exercise is related to health and that physical activity is beneficial for sleep and can improve insomnia symptoms, it is unclear which factors may have an effect in alleviating sleep disorders.

The link between physical activity and sleep may be influenced by a number of modulating factors, such as gender, age, body mass index (BMI), fitness level, overall health and the nature of the type of exercise in question.

The research team studied data from 1998 to 2002 (ECRHS II) and data from 2011 to 2014 (ECRHS III) of 4,399 participants in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey conducted at 21 centers in nine countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany and Sweden. was analyzed.

Researchers classified participants into the active group if they exercised more than twice a week and for more than one hour a week. Additionally, according to changes in the participants’ activity status over the past 10 years, they were classified into four groups: continuously inactive, inactive, active, and continuously active.

Among the participants, 36.9% were in the continuously inactive group, 20.3% in the inactive group, 17.9% in the active group, and 24.9% in the continuously active group.

The study found that over the long term, people who consistently exercised two to three times a week were less likely to report symptoms of insomnia and were more likely to sleep the recommended amount of sleep (6 to 9 hours).

“This study is consistent with previous research showing the beneficial effects of physical activity on insomnia symptoms,” the research team said. “The current study found that people who were initially active but then became inactive were more likely to exercise over time, as the association disappeared. “It shows the importance of consistency when doing it.”
