A memory exercise. This is how the writer Patxi Zubizarreta summed up the book ‘Zerria’ (Sowing) at the event to receive children’s and young people’s literature in Basque. He attended Donostia with “joy of joy” because such recognitions are “wonderful”, even if they are also an indicator of the state of the sector to some extent. “I had to submit the book to the Lizardi prize because the independent fee has to be paid month after month.” That competition gave way and now it will continue “thanks to the readers”. Along the way, the book ‘Zerria’ recently won the Spanish Children’s and Youth Literature Award.

– How do you rate the prize?

– When I go to schools they ask me and I always tell them that there are more awards that I have not received. Those bastards don’t appear on Wikipedia or on the web and, from that point of view, I can follow my heart again and once again buy and highlight the books I want. After all, that’s what we writers are, readers. And joy because it will give the book a second life and give the opportunity to focus on the Spanish translation. That is what literature claims, the spirit of translation.

– You reflected on the state of the sector in the press conference. Is the prize a way to fill the tank with gas again?

– It is very complex. On the one hand, the reality is very crude; and, on the other hand, the readership is moving away. Our challenge must be to attract that which is coming closer and closer to the screen. Literature is also on the screens, a lot, and I think that this should allow us to adapt to today’s world. In this respect, ‘Zerria’ is an atypical book, because children’s albums are very colorful, but as they become teenagers, the drawings are black and white and then disappear. The comic is very good, we adults also need drawings, and it’s the same to include color drawings in a youth literature book and even more so with the quality of Anton Olariaga. We still need to cultivate interdisciplinarity, because in this hyper-accelerated and violent world we give a voice that literature whispers in our ear.

– Molds are not only limited to colors, the same happens with length.

– I don’t distinguish between children’s and young people’s literature, then the classification comes at the publishing house. It is true that when I write I have a particular audience in mind. I really liked the exercise with this book in Legazpi, because in addition to language, literature, studying the book with the high school students, they worked on biology – glaciers, mountains, the development and decline of the world – and philosophy, because ultimately this book reformulates the obvious ‘homo homini lupus’ in this case it is ‘homo homini porkus’. We are making the biggest mistakes.
