Potsdam – The photographer couple Ute and Werner Mahler have been awarded the 2023 Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography (DGPh). They are “two outstanding German photographers who, both during the GDR era and today, realized their own and non-conformist view of the world in different, intensive photo projects,” said DGPh chairman Michael Biedowicz on Saturday at the award ceremony in Potsdam’s Barberini Museum.
Ute Mahler, born in 1949 in Berka in Thuringia, worked as a freelance photographer primarily for the legendary GDR magazine “Sibylle” and, after the fall of the Wall, for “Stern”, among others. Werner Mahler, born in Boßdorf in Saxony-Anhalt in 1950, worked as a freelance photographer for the GDR magazines “Für Dich” and “Sibylle”. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Ute and Werner Mahler founded the successful agency “Ostkreuz” with other East German photographers.
The Culture Prize is awarded annually as the highest honor of the German Society for Photography. It is not endowed. In addition to a certificate, there is a gold-framed optical lens designed by Ewald Mataré (1887-1965).
