I will probably celebrate alone. I would have to go to my loved ones by train or by car.
Automobile? There should be snow, freezing rain. So no. Train? Just the thought of Berlin Central Station makes me sick. It’s full of people with and without masks. Maybe fake vaccination cards, dripping noses. Then they sneeze and cough in the compartment.
So I call my daughter and granddaughter: “Dear ones, I don’t dare. My life is more important to me than hugging you. “
I will never say such a thing. It used to be too nice when we unpacked presents under the Christmas tree that were wrapped in red, gold paper and we sang “Silent Night” together.
Even though it wasn’t snowing, we looked at the snow. It fell like something very quiet, like the soul of Christmas.
You can’t celebrate Christmas alone, you can get drunk alone, become an outsider.
I think I’ll take the train.
