JERUSALEM The palace intrigue is a family intrigue. The stepbrother who plots – or so they would accuse him – to regain the throne he was promised. The former councilor who felt sidelined and tried to return to the center of power. A country that is in the midst of the upheavals in the Middle East and which up to now has avoided the most dangerous changes. A key country for Joe Biden’s administration and the new relationships the president wants to create in the region.
A flag so strategic on the map drawn by Washington, that the capital’s most important newspaper picked up and immediately published rumors gathered among American intelligence: the Jordanian secret police – writes the Washington Post — it would have presented itself in front of the villa of Prince Hamza bin Hussein and would have ordered him to stay there with his wife Basmah. At the same time, Bassem Awadallah, a former finance minister, another member of the royal family and about twenty people were arrested.
Hamza’s arrest was denied by Petra, the kingdom’s official news agency. But – this is confirmed – he was forced “to avoid activities that could foster chaos.” Prince Hamza, however, spread in a video in which he confirms that he is under house arrest: “The chief of staff of the armed forces informed me that I am not allowed to go out, communicate or meet people because during meetings I had attended – or on social media or during visits made by me – criticisms of the government or the king had been expressed ». Something happened in Amman overnight. The sources explain to the Washington Postthat “the plan was well articulated” and aimed “to create instability”, denounce “foreign influences” (Awadallah has been working for years as an economic consultant in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries), some leaders of the desert tribe. The situation is under control and Abdallah II’s palace protected by armored and military vehicles.
Hamza is the son of King Hussein and Noor, the fourth wife and of American descent. Twelve brothers and half brothers lived together, enough to create conflicting ambitions and jealousies. Hamza, 41, carried the title of crown prince until it was taken from him in 2004 and then bestowed on Hussein., the eldest son of Abdallah II and Queen Rania.
Already King Hussein, his father and grandfather, had changed his mind about the line of succession and had bequeathed the Hashemite kingdom and an embittered uncle to his son. Hussein had decided to remove the throne from his brother prince Hassan – promised him in 1965 – a couple of weeks before his death in 1999.
