Police collaboration with countries such as Morocco, Senegal, Mauritania and Gambia prevented the arrival of more than 27,000 migrants to Spain, which means having stopped 40 percent of irregular departures, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, said this Thursday. .

The minister stated that this is synonymous with having “saved their lives”, by having prevented these people from putting themselves in danger on difficult journeys. The number of departures avoided is a data collected by the Interior as a result of the “disarticulations” carried out in the countries of origin and transit of “the different criminal organizations that traffic with migrants” and of all the operations where Spain intervenes and that manage to abort these trips. According to the data that the Ministry of the Interior published yesterday, 56,852 immigrants attempted to enter Spain irregularly in 2023 by sea and land, which represents an increase of 82.1 percent compared to the previous year, with a notable increase in arrivals to the Canary Islands (Atlantic), which recorded the arrival of 39,910 people from Africa.

Regarding these figures, Marlaska stressed that not only did the migratory flow that arrives to Spain through the western Mediterranean and the Atlantic route increase, but it also did so in Italy, which registered more than 155 thousand arrivals of irregular migrants, and in Greece, where it increased 200 percent compared to 2022.
