Toaster maker Balmuda to develop smartphones

by time news

Home appliance company Balmuda, known for its toasters, will release its first smartphone for the Japanese market in 2021, Nikkei Asia reported. Balmuda will develop the design, and the production of smartphones will be established at the facilities of Kyocera, which will become the production partner of the firm.

“Smartphones look the same today and consumers have few design options. This is a chance for us to become # 1 in the market. Not in terms of its share, but in terms of the uniqueness of the proposal, – said the head of Balmuda Gen Terao. “We intend to create not just a stylish device, but also a smartphone that is comfortable in everyday use”.

The devices will run on the Android operating system and will support the 5G communication standard. Balmuda smartphones will initially be available only to users of the Japanese telecom operator SoftBank Corp., but then devices not tied to networks will appear. Smartphone sales from Balmuda are due to start in November.
