In its statement following the incident, the Seattle Police Department expressed its “deepest condolences to Kandola’s family, calling it a “terrible tragedy for all involved.” But the department has not released details about the fatal crash pending an investigation. For now, the officer who ran over Kandola to death remains on the job and not yet removed.

In a statement to local radio, the young woman’s family said they were “heartbroken”. “Jahnawi’s tragic and untimely death has left her family and community with a huge hole in their hearts that will never be mended,” the statement said. “She was the daughter of a single mother who teaches primary school in India.”
“Despite earning little less money, her mother raised Jahanavi and encouraged her to travel in the United States in hopes that Jahanavi would have a better future and a better life abroad,” it said. “Emma’s hopes and dreams are now cut short.”
