Most Russians will be able to buy a new PlayStation no earlier than January. Sony introduced a thinner version of the PlayStation 5 Slim console on October 15. Sales on the world market will start in November, including in Russia, but only small deliveries are planned for the country, media reports. “Kommersant FM” talked to retailers and found out when to expect a new set-top box in Russian stores.
M.Video – Eldorado representative Andrey Petrov confirmed that the console will not appear in their locations before the New Year:
“PlayStation has perhaps the largest and most loyal user base in the country. Over nine months, consoles from the three leading manufacturers – PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo – accounted for about 35% of those purchased in quantitative terms and more than 80% of the market in money.
In physical terms, the majority of the market continues to be occupied by re-released retro consoles, the cost of which is on average 2 thousand rubles. A console called Steam Deck is also actively gaining popularity. We regularly continue to introduce Russians to the world’s major technical innovations, including gaming ones.
We also plan to offer our customers updated PlayStation 5 consoles as quickly as possible, taking into account the complicated supply chain due to the departure of the brand. We expect new products to appear in January. We will announce their prices a little later, closer to the start of sales.”
Ozon and Wildberries told the media that they expect deliveries also after the New Year. According to market players, the increased demand for consoles among Russians is explained by the fact that the situation with the production and availability of devices has stabilized. Despite the departure of brands from Russia, retailers managed to establish supplies compared to 2022.
The re:Store PlayStation 5 Slim should appear in November, but the supply volume and cost of the devices are still unknown, says Tikhon Smykov, president and managing partner of Inventive Retail Group, which includes the re:Store chain of stores:
“It’s difficult to talk about mass production, but for now we expect that we will have the products in November. Due to the complexity of current foreign trade, this is all purchased on the spot wholesale market. And it’s quite difficult to assume and receive any volume-related commitments. We can’t say anything about the cost yet.”
The new PlayStation model is 30% smaller and approximately 20% lighter than the base version. The set-top box will receive a 1 terabyte SSD drive and a removable disk drive. The company stated that it would sell the entire volume of the previous model and make the PlayStation 5 Slim the only version available for purchase.
The console will be released in two modifications – the main one and the Digital Edition. The recommended price for the first is about 49 thousand rubles, for the second – 44 thousand rubles.
After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Sony stopped supplying PlayStation consoles to Russia. The company curtailed sales of software and hardware and limited access to the PlayStation Store application store for Russian users.
