Al-Marsad newspaper: Neuroscientist Dr. Faisal Al-Otaibi, during his guest appearance on the Al-Liwan program, responded to a question that read: “Is there a relationship between epilepsy, convulsions, and possession of the jinn?”

Study on epilepsy

He said during an episode of the program broadcast yesterday on the Rotana Khalijiya channel: “There are studies in Saudi Arabia that survey the extent of society’s awareness, and the question was whether epilepsy is a jinn or an organic disease.”

He continued: “Twenty-five years ago, the percentage of people who said that epilepsy is a disease related to the jinn was 41%, and this percentage is considered large, but recently the same study was repeated, and those who said that epilepsy is a disease related to the jinn was 19%.”

Causes of epilepsy

He added: “Epilepsy has several causes, including brain dysfunction, consciousness disorders, lack of oxygen during birth, brain deformities, clots, and other immune causes.”

He pointed out that any person is susceptible to convulsions, but they are not considered epilepsy, and they can occur in 10% of people, but if convulsions are repeated, this is considered epilepsy.
