India Moves up Three Ranks in 2021 Henley Passport Index

In the latest edition of the Henley Passport Index, India has made significant progress, moving up three ranks to claim the 80th spot. The index, which ranks the world’s most powerful passports, saw India improve its ranking from 83rd last year.

Topping the list of most powerful passports are the countries of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain, which all have visa-free access to 194 countries. Japan and Singapore have maintained their top spot for the past five years, showcasing the strength and global mobility of their passports.

Finland, Sweden, and South Korea come in second with access to 193 countries, while Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands hold the third position with passport holders able to enter 192 countries without a visa.

On the other hand, Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the list with visa-free access to only 28 countries, highlighting the stark contrast in global mobility. Pakistan is ranked 101st, making it the fourth lowest-ranking country, while Syria and Iraq follow closely behind.

Christian H. Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners and creator of the Passport Index, emphasized the increasing disparity in global mobility between countries and highlighted the all-time high differences between top and bottom-ranking countries in the index.

The Henley Passport Index, issued annually by the London-based global citizenship and residency advisory firm Henley & Partners, ranks the level of access each country has to other countries without a visa. The index includes 227 countries and 199 passports, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since 2006.

Overall, the 2021 Henley Passport Index serves as a valuable resource for understanding the global mobility landscape and the access each passport provides to travelers around the world.
