Weather at the weekend: Extreme continuous rain at the edge of the Alps

by time news

Dhe German weather service warns of continuous heavy rain on the edge of the Alps. In the course of Friday and Saturday, “extremely heavy continuous rain” between 50 and 140 liters per square meter is possible within 48 hours, intensified by thunderstorms. It could also rain heavily in the rest of Old Bavaria, with amounts between 50 and 80 liters per square meter. As a precaution, the Bavarian Red Cross put the air rescue service of the water rescue service on increased standby. According to the weather service, the trigger is a high altitude low that moves from the Lake Constance area over the south of Bavaria during the day.

Smaller bodies of water in particular could therefore rise sharply within a short time and burst their banks, the Bavarian flood news service said on its website. “Regionally, larger regions can also be affected by flooding.”

The weekend in Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, on the other hand, will remain mostly dry. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), heavy rain of around 15 liters per square meter per hour is still possible locally on Saturday night. There could also be a few thunderstorms. Temperatures will reach between 24 and 28 degrees on Friday and around 22 degrees in the Eifel.

On Saturday, however, the last individual showers will move eastwards. After that, the DWD expects a change of sun and clouds. It gets up to 27 degrees warm – at high altitudes it gets around 22 degrees. The night to Sunday will then remain free of precipitation and the DWD foresees almost no rain on Sunday either.

It will be cooler in the east

In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, the weekend starts with lots of clouds, a few rain showers and much cooler than in the past few days. As the German Weather Service in Leipzig announced, it will be hazy on Friday, and individual showers or thunderstorms are possible in the mountains in the evening. The temperatures rise to 21 to 27 degrees, east of the Elbe up to 27 degrees, in the Harz Mountains 16 to 20 degrees

According to the forecast, Saturday will also be partly cloudy and there will be showery rain or thunderstorms in some areas. Only 20 to 24 degrees are expected, in the Harz Mountains 16 to 22 degrees. Sunday remains rain-free. In addition to clouds, there will be sunshine at 24 to 27 degrees, in the mountains at 20 to 24 degrees.

After showers and thunderstorms, the weather in Berlin and Brandenburg calmed down again at the weekend. As reported by the German Weather Service in Potsdam, the thunderstorms can be isolated, especially in the Uckermark. Up to 30 liters of rain per square meter can fall in one hour. The thunderstorms are moving northwards, but may form again in the afternoon and evening. The temperatures rise to 24 to 29 degrees.

On Saturday the sky will be overcast, in the east there will initially be more showery rain, but it will subside. In the evening the clouds loosen up. The thermometer rises to 23 to 26 degrees. After a sunny start, it will be partly cloudy and dry on Sunday. The temperatures rise to 24 to 27 degrees.
