jpnn.comJAKARTA – Labor observer from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Tadjuddin Noer Effendi regrets that there are calls to boycott Israeli products, because the impact is detrimental to the nation’s children.

He admitted that he felt sorry for parents who spent a lot of money to educate their children, but ended up unemployed because it was difficult to find work.

“Conditions are getting more difficult because of these boycott calls. Where will our undergraduate graduates go if many companies close down,” said Tadjuddin Noer Effendi in his statement, Tuesday (19/3).

He said that at UGM, where he teaches alone, as many as 12 thousand students graduate every year. Not to mention at other universities.

Meanwhile, with Indonesia’s current 5% economic growth, it can only absorb around one million per year. The Indonesian workforce entering the job market every year reaches two and a half million.

“This means that every year we create 1.5 million unemployed people, and 12 percent of them are undergraduate graduates, especially with calls for a boycott, where will our undergraduate graduates go in the future,” he said.

Relying on local companies and MSMEs alone to accommodate millions of unemployed graduates in Indonesia, according to him, is impossible. There will be more and more Indonesians working abroad, especially smart students.

“Moreover, several countries are currently experiencing a shortage of workers, such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Is that what this nation wants,” he said.

UGM observers say that boycotting Israeli products could trigger graduate unemployment rates.
